Understand the meaning behind the Dark Skies Save Lives sticker and how it raises awareness about light pollution's impact on migratory birds.
Quick answer
The Dark Skies Save Lives sticker promotes the dark skies movement, which encourages reducing light pollution to protect migratory birds that navigate by natural light.
What the sticker really means
Many people see the Dark Skies Save Lives sticker and assume it's about stargazing or energy savings. While those are related, the primary message is bird conservation. Artificial light at night disorients migratory birds, causing collisions with buildings and exhausting them during long journeys. The sticker is a visible reminder to turn off unnecessary lights and use bird-safe lighting.
Why it matters for birds
Millions of birds migrate at night, using stars and moonlight to navigate. Bright city lights confuse them, leading to fatal crashes or wasted energy. By displaying this sticker, you signal support for darker skies that give birds a safer passage. It's a small but meaningful step in raising awareness about light pollution's impact on wildlife.
